Welcome to the Industrial Engineering Department

From integrating high standards of safety at a steel plant to maximizing the processes of production of edible food products to devising efficient processes for locomotive maintenance at a rail yard, the industrial engineering field is one of the most wide ranging engineering programs.   Industrial Engineers devise efficient systems and processes that integrate machines, materials, workers and information.  Safety is always a high priority when manufacturing a product or providing a service.

At South Dakota Mines, the Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM) program is housed within the Department of Industrial Engineering. Graduates of the program employ a set of skills that include mathematical modeling, probability and statistics, human factors, safety engineering, interpersonal skills, project management, and the ability to manage and administer large technical engineering and research projects. Thus, industrial engineering may be thought of as applied problem solving, from inception to implementation.

An Industrial Engineering student at South Dakota Mines receives hands-on experience with 3D printing, CNC machining, laser engraving,  computer simulations, facilities planning, and optimization.  The program also has the most electives available compared to other engineering majors on campus, which allows students the ability to take other engineering classes outside the department (computer science, healthcare, business, etc.) geared toward their specific interests.  The department prepares students for success from freshmen year encouraging attending school career fairs with resume review help.  This provides numerous opportunities for paid co-ops or internships with such companies as Cargill, Michelin, L3 Technologies, Hormel, Collins Aerospace, and Union Pacific to name a few.
