Rapid City and Surrounding Region

SDSM&T is located at the foot of the beautiful Black Hills, twenty minutes from Mount Rushmore, in Rapid City, South Dakota’s second largest city.  Rapid City has a relatively mild climate, and the Black Hills region offers numerous opportunities for summer and winter outdoor experiences.  For more information regarding Rapid City visit www.rapidcity.com.

Come for the learning, but you'd be remiss not to enjoy the beautiful Black Hills and the many opportunities offered.  Some of the best rock climbing in the world can be found in the Needles section of the Black Hills.  Harney Peak is the highest point east of the Rockies and a hike to the top offers world class vistas.  Enjoy a short hike behind Sylvan Lake, an outing with friends to Crazy Horse or Mt. Rushmore monuments, or join a spelunking group and explore one of the many caves in the region.  One of the best trout fishing streams in the country runs right through the heart of Rapid City and is a short walk from campus.  If outdoor activities is your thing, Rapid City and the Black Hills can't be beat for summer and winter outdoor experiences for refreshing the body and spirit.
